2.Alphabetical Knowledge

3.Review of vocabulary and sounds

syllable - a part of a word with one vowel sound
suffix - letters added to the end of a word that change the meaning of the word
4. New Learning
New learning can include anything from a new letter or letter combination and its sound to a new syllable type or spelling rule. The lessons will always address your child's needs and will be explicitly taught with practice included for mastery.
In this part of the lesson students will decode words, divide words into syllables, complete word sorts, build words with magnetic letters, and a variety of other activities.
5. Spelling/Writing
Each lesson will include dictation: letters, words, and sentences based on your child's skill level. When enough skills are in place, students will also work on writing to a prompt in order to address sentence formation, mechanics, and spelling skills within a written compostition.
6.Comprehension
For emergent readers this part of the lesson will involve listening comprehension and vocabulary development. For others it will involve short passages and books - both fiction and nonfiction - that your child will read to me as we stop to apply decoding strategies and discuss the storyline or information in the text. In some cases these texts will then lead to written responses in step 5.
7. Home Connection
A text and/or an activity will always be included in your child's folder so that you can practice reading and reinforce learning at home.
